I was once again blown away by the outstanding Mexican food at Empellon in the West Village.  This is the place to go for out-of-this-world tacos, drinks, and desserts.  The steak in the steak tacos was thick and juicy, not at all dry.  The scallops were some of the best scallops I have ever had from any cuisine; they were tender and plump.  The warm honey infused with cinnamon that accompanies the bunuelos was the most fragrant, soothing, and unusual honey I have ever tasted— and I am a honey fanatic.  Unless you are absolutely ravenous, skip the $12 chips with guac and salsa (although the unusual salsas make this trio atypical and tempting) so you can save room for dessert and drinks!  Here’s what my mom and I ordered:

skirt steak tacos with mojo de ajo

scallop tacos with avocado puree and xni pec (tomato, radish, habanero)

cookie sampler: snickerdoodles, mexican wedding cookies, mexican chocolate shortbread, cochinitos and sugar cookies

bunuelos with cajeta and warm honey
