For gourmet Mexican food with a twist, go to Empellon in the West Village.  Reservations are highly recommended as this trendy restaurant has had everyone talking since its opening week.  Owned by former wd~50 pastry chef Alex Stupak, Empellon pushes to bring traditional Mexican fare to newly impressive levels.  Our waitress was probably the best I have had since my birthday dinner at Jean-Georges; I commend her capability to think outside the box while attending to our every request swiftly.  She embodied the epitome of a people-person and set the precedent for the equally impressive service at Empellon.  

our meal, tapas style, in chronological order:

white tuna ceviche with beets and guava purée

molote of smoked plantain with romaine lettuce and salsa roja

chipotle shrimp with avocado purée tacos

beer braised tongue with potatoes and arbol chile salsa tacos

passion fruit tart with mezcal, mint and toasted meringue

chocolate flan with masa-cocoa streusel and cinnamon ice cream

Additionally, the margaritas were the best I have had
